Beautiful Disaster - Chapter 1

Spike didn’t have much further to go. Down below him, he could see the others fighting and he hoped it would be enough. He couldn’t stand the thought of one of his girls getting hurt. There was no way on Earth he was going to let it happen.

His eyes sought out Buffy in amongst the others and he saw she was fighting against the blonde bitch god of hell. He smiled briefly inside as he remembered what he’d said to the Slayer just before they’d left her house tonight, and what she’d said to him.

He wasn’t a monster to her.

He’d become a man.

Pushing forwards, he made it up the last of the rickety metal stairs and smiled at Dawn. She seemed to stop struggling when she saw him, her face becoming washed with relief and hope.

He winced as a sharp pain erupted his side. Looking down, he found a knife sticking out of him. His eyes widened as he saw his attacker was the demon that he and Xander had supposedly killed.

Setting his jaw tight, he launched himself at the demon, ignoring the pain the knife caused each time he moved. As far as he could see, if it was still stuck in him then it didn’t present a danger to Dawn. Getting in the first punch, he blocked everything the smaller demon threw at him and grinned as he began his attack.

Buffy looked up to see Spike fighting someone on the tower above her. She could almost see it swaying with the movements of the two. As Spike stepped close to the edge, her heart leapt into her mouth and she gasped quietly.

Forcing herself to concentrate on what was happening at her end of the fight, she signalled for Willow and Giles to start opening the portal. All she had to do was get hold of Glory.

Easier said than done.

She ran in the direction that the hell god had gone. Rushing into the little room, she found Ben standing in front of her and remembered what she’d been told by the others.

Ben was Glory. Glory was Ben.

Anger boiled up in her as she remembered all the times she had trusted him over the past few months. Starting towards him, she realised that she had to take advantage of him being Ben. This human form was weaker than Glory. He was as strong as a normal person, which meant he was weaker than her.

She hit him hard across the face, smirking at him as he recoiled. Not giving him time to recover, she began fighting him and was surprised when he made an attempt to fight back. She didn’t stop when he turned back into Glory, she just kept hitting her, not giving her a chance to attack. By beating the hell out of Ben, she had weakened Glory. This was the chance she’d been waiting for. She couldn’t bring herself to kill Ben, but she could throw him into another dimension.

Willow had chosen one a long way away, one that would be safe by her calculations, one that no one would ever look in.

Buffy made a low growling noise as Glory scratched down her arm, making small ribbons of red on her skin as she began to bleed. Using her anger to fuel her moves, she dodged and weaved, avoiding the powerful punches that the hell god was throwing at her.

“No… not now!” Glory growled as she felt Ben fighting against her.

Buffy grinned as she was again faced with Ben. Grabbing hold of him, she got his arm in a tight lock behind his back and began marching him out into the open where Willow and Giles had hopefully managed to get a portal going.

Spike snapped the demons neck with ease. Dawn flinched as the broken body sagged to the metal grating near the stairs. Walking towards Dawn on the creaking platform, he pulled the knife from his side, inhaling sharply through his teeth as the blade left his flesh with a quiet sucking noise. Blood spilled from the wound as he bent over to cut the bonds that were holding Dawn in place on the tower and Spike didn’t give it a second thought.

He’d heal, always did.

The red rivulets spiralling towards the ground from the platform didn’t get to touch the earth. The inter-dimensional portal that was being summoned by a witch and an ex-librarian engulfed them. Buffy continued to hold Ben firmly with one arm bent behind his back. As he turned into Glory once more, she felt fingernails digging into her already bloodied and bruised arm.

“Bitch!” Buffy ground out and looked at Giles, her teeth gritted against the pain. “Will you get that damn portal open?”

Just as she said that, it opened up to welcome its new visitor.

“Now, Buffy.” Giles nodded.

Not needing to be told twice, she shoved Glory through into whatever dark hell awaited her on the other side and dusted her hands against each other as she smiled.

Turning away from the portal as it closed, she looked at her bloodied arm and hands, and sighed. It had been a long fight, one that seemed as though it would never end. Looking at the gang and then up at the tower above them, she allowed herself a wide smile as she saw Dawn being helped down the stairs by Spike. One apocalypse averted, now for the next.

“So… who’s up for a we beat the bad guys and lived to tell the tale party down the Bronze?” She looked around at the stony faces. “What? I know it’s late but…”

“Love to Buffy, just um…” Willow looked puzzled as she wrapped her arm around Tara’s waist, unwilling to let her leave her side now that she was back with them.

Buffy frowned.

“There appears to have been a slight hitch.” Giles pointed at something behind her.

Turning around, Buffy looked straight ahead. There was nothing there. When there was a noise slightly reminiscent of feet shuffling on dusty concrete, she let her eyes drop towards the ground and jumped. There in front of her were two little children holding hands, one blonde rosy-cheeked girl and one brown haired shy looking boy. She gasped as she looked at the little girl. It was like she was looking at a picture of herself when she was a child.

“Oh my god, Giles…you made a mini me!” Buffy couldn’t quite believe what was happening. One minute she was defeating the hell bitch and the next minute she was face to face with the child she used to be.

“No need to panic. We’ll figure this out.” Giles tried to look calm. He was silently thankful that all eyes were on the little ones and not him because if they had been he didn’t think he would have been able to keep up the pretence of not being flustered by what had happened.

“If she’s me then who is…” Buffy never got to finish the sentence.

“William? I don’t think mommy is very pleased to see us.” The little girl pouted at the boy who turned to look at her with bright blue eyes.

“Hush, Lizbeth, let’s find daddy… I don’t like this place.” William whispered to the girl and she nodded.

“Daddy?” Buffy looked down at them. Things were apparently about to get a lot worse.

Elizabeth screamed as the little boy bent over to pick up a doll that was lying on the floor.

“Leave her alone you big bully!”

“Was only going to…” William was about to say ‘give her to you’ when he paused and looked towards the bottom of the stairs.

“Aunty Dawn… aunty Dawn…” Elizabeth ran over to her where she stood clutching the railings with a confused look on her face. “Nasty William took my dolly.

“Didn’t. Was giving it back to her…” His face was a mask of innocence as he looked up at Dawn.

Bending down, Dawn looked at the two children in front of her, then at Buffy, and then over her shoulder at Spike who had just appeared on the bottom step.

“Pig.” Elizabeth poked William hard and his lower lip trembled slightly.

“Brat.”

“Simmer down!” Spike growled at the children fighting in front of him as he clutched his side and they both turned to look up at him.

His jaw dropped.

The little boy’s face was unmistakeable—it was like staring at himself.

William’s lip trembled further because of Spike’s shouting and Elizabeth spilt hot tears onto her cheeks before turning away from him and running towards Buffy.

“Mommy…” She wrapped herself around Buffy’s legs and looked up at her with tears rolling down her face. “Daddy shouted at me.”

“Bloody hell!” Spike met Buffy’s eyes.

“Bloody hell.” Parroted William.

“Spike!” Buffy shot him a deadly look.

“Buffy?”

“Enough with the swearing. We need to figure this out… what are you doing?”

Spike paused with William’s chest still pressed to his ear, his hands still firmly grasping the boy’s arms to his sides. “What’s it look like? Checking to see if he takes after daddy dearest.”

William’s little feet wriggled where they hung three foot off the floor.

“Put him down, Spike.” Buffy paused for a second before looking awkward. “Does he?”

“Nope, beating strong.” With a grin, he put William back down on the ground.

“Daddy’s hands are cold.” William looked up at Dawn and smiled wide.

“Got that right.” Spike ruffled his hair then stopped, willing himself not to look like a ponce.

“Daddy’s a vampire, you moron.” Elizabeth’s tone was matter of fact as she frowned at William, her hands on her hips.

“Sounds just like you.” Spike grinned at Buffy and she gave him a look that said it wasn’t funny.

“Really need to figure this out.” She pressed her fingers to the bridge of her nose. The last thing she needed was a miniature Spike running about calling her mommy, although William did seem sweet enough.

“Giles!” Spike’s eyes narrowed on him. Giles did this so he could undo it. William wrapped himself around Spike’s leg and held on tightly as he walked over to Giles.

Looking down as he came to a halt, Spike rolled his eyes at the sight of William smiling up at him.

Suddenly everyone was looking at Giles.

“Maybe we should go… go… research this little problem.” He stammered as he felt hot and flushed.

“And do what with these two?” Spike arched a brow as he pointed at Elizabeth and then William.

“Bring them with us, of course.” Buffy responded and then realised that Spike was taking this as well as she was, only he was letting it show and she was bottling it up inside.

Where the hell had they come from?

She looked at the two of them as they smiled at each other. For all she knew they could be demons pretending to be children. It wouldn’t be the first time something like that had happened to her. Giles was right though, they needed to research, and they needed to do it quickly. She didn’t like the idea of not knowing exactly what they were.

Part of her wanted to ask Spike to hit one of them to see if it was wholly human, but she decided that it probably wouldn’t go down well with the others, or Spike.

She looked at him where he stood opposite her, his attention on the little boy still wrapped around his leg. He didn’t look like he was enjoying the prospect of having to play the father figure to a miniature version of himself and a tiny version of her.

For some reason the idea that he didn’t like them being a mother and a father together upset her a little. She had never thought about it before, but now it had fallen into her lap she realised that she’d thought his love for her would’ve extended to having a family.

Not that it was possible.

Well, except this.

But she didn’t know what this was. She was still stuck on the idea that the second they got them into the Magic Box, or her home, they were going to sprout horns, grow by ten feet and try to eat them all.

Spike cocked his head to one side as he found Buffy staring at him. She looked like she was miles away in thought and he’d be dumb if he didn’t know what it was about.

She was probably thinking exactly the same thing as him.

What the bloody hell was going on?

“Buffy?” Xander said and smiled at her as she looked at him with a dazed expression. “We research bound?”

She nodded dumbly and tried to smile.

The gang headed off, leaving Buffy and Spike trapped by the children wrapped around their legs. Raising his eyes to meet hers, Spike smiled and she sighed.

“Next time there’s an apocalypse.” Buffy bent over and picked Elizabeth up, letting the child’s legs wrap around her waist. “Lets not avert it this way.”

Picking up William in his arms, Spike winced slightly. Pain shot out in all directions from the wound in his side and he swallowed noisily as he tried to hide it from Buffy. He looked from the little yawning boy to Buffy and nodded in agreement, unable to speak through the pain.

In a bright white room, a pale woman smiled at a pale man as they stood in front of a shimmering mirror. “I said they’d do just fine.”
