Violins And Heartstrings - Chapter 10

Buffy stepped out into the late afternoon sun and heaved a long sigh then smiled when she saw Spike's now familiar blue Viper parked near the grass. She frowned as she walked over to it, his car was there but there was no sign of him. Buffy was about to reach for her mobile phone when a voice by her ear made her jump.

"Looking for me, love?"

Buffy turned to see Spike stood behind her; he was playing with a single long stemmed white rose.

"Been looking for you for years." She smiled up at him and the looked at the rose. "For me?"

"Actually, it was for my car, but I'll let you have it." He handed her the rose and Buffy felt her cheeks flush--if he kept being this sweet she didn't know how she was going to tell him.

Spike held the car door open and smiled. "Your chariot awaits my lady."

"You're silly." Buffy bought the flower to her nose and inhaled its fragrance.

"Was always a fool for you." Spike handed her into the car and kissed her hand, Buffy blushed again--he certainly was a lot more assertive these days.

He hopped into the drivers seat and waited for her to buckle up before starting the engine--there was no way that he was going to endanger her, his driving was bad enough on a good day let alone when he was nervous.

When they had passed the studio gates Spike stopped the car and waited for directions from Buffy. He watched her point left and then started driving again. As Spike looked over at her, he couldn't help noticing how tense she looked.

"Nice day at work, honey?" He gave her a silly smile and Buffy giggled--it did feel like they were an item, what with him driving her home from work.

"Tired. They work you so hard, I'm a violinist not a machine."

"Want me to have a word?" Spike raised his brows and gave her a sideward glance.

"I'm sure you'd love to, it's your fault that my concentration is so wonky."

"My fault? Do tell." Spike was intrigued.

"Kept thinking about yesterday and other stuff." Buffy's voice became subdued as she thought about it again.

"Stuff?" Spike turned a corner and stopped at the junction, Buffy pointed right.

"It's nothing." Buffy felt a lump form in her throat--it was very much something. "Can we talk about this later? I need to unwind a little."

Spike didn't like the sound of that, there was something playing on her mind that she didn't want to tell him which usually meant it was something he wasn't going to like.

"It's a beautiful car, Spike." Watching his face grow pensive, she decided a change of subject was in order.

"Yeah." Spike picked up on her desire to stick to idle chatter and went with it. "She likes it when I make her roar."

He smirked at her and Buffy frowned.

"Roar?"

"Roar. Like this." He quirked his eyebrow and then put his foot down hard on the accelerator.

Buffy squealed and as the car roared into life, then she burst into giggles while she watched the trees whiz by. Spike looked over at her for a split second before returning his eyes to the road, whatever had been weighing her down five seconds ago seemed to have lifted. He chuckled softly as the Viper rounded a corner, tyres squealing slightly. Buffy giggled again. Looking over at Spike she couldn't help noticing how full of energy he was around her, always playing the fool to make her smile--she hoped that he'd never change.

As her thoughts weighed her down, she fell silent again--her feelings were already getting in the way.

A few miles later and Buffy pointed out her driveway. Looking at his new surroundings Spike couldn't help smiling; the area was covered with trees and small country houses surrounded by large walls, he liked the privacy and seclusion the area seemed to have.

Spike was even more impressed when he saw her house--it was a fair-sized stone manor house that reminded him of England. The driveway was gold coloured gravel and there were trees all around them. Buffy took a deep breath as he parked up next to her car.

"Like it?" She looked over at him as he stared at the house.

"It's bloody…well…big. When you said you had a house, I pictured a little white washed piece of the burbs not this mini palace."

"Spike?" Buffy held her breath as she waited for him to respond.

"Hmm?"

"Nothing. It doesn't matter." Buffy got out of the car and started towards the house, Spike frowned and got a feeling in his stomach that said his nerves were spiralling out of control.

He stepped out of the car and looked up at the house and then at Buffy.

"You coming in?" Buffy gave him a warm smile from where she stood by the front door, her stomach felt like it was overflowing with butterflies.

"Dunno. Did you make lemonade?" Spike grinned at her as he tried to forget her moment in the car.

"Fresh this morning." She watched Spike saunter over to her.

"Never could resist your lemonade."

Buffy smiled as her insides heated up over the words her had purred at her--she was going to tell him, he had a right to know before things got too intense. Trying to ignore the fact that she'd attempted to tell him twice already and failed, Buffy formulated a plan, they would sit down and talk, then she would tell him.
