Violins And Heartstrings - Chapter 28
Buffy fidgeted through the entirety of her flight to Los Angeles, time seemed to be passing at a painfully slow speed. She tried to watch the little movies but found her concentration kept slipping to thoughts of Spike.
Her agent had managed to find out that he was meant to be in LA and she'd arranged for her to meet the director under the pretence of possibly wanting to contribute to the soundtrack. Now all she had to do was go and meet him, and see Spike.
Landing in LA felt weird, she was so close to home and the sticky summer heat reminded her of the summer all those years ago that she had passed with William. As she cleared customs she raced for the taxi stands and threw her luggage into the nearest open passenger door.
The man who was about to get into it turned to look at her.
"Sorry. I really need to take this cab." Buffy hurried in and got everything settled down before leaning forwards and telling the driver where to take her.
An hour later, she was striding across the studio lot to the hangar where the movies latest scenes were being shot. Her hands were sweating and the butterflies in her stomach were on the verge of making a hurricane as she slipped into the open doors.
The director of the movie turned and smiled at her as she slowly approached, her eyes scanned the expansive room for signs of Spike but he was nowhere to be seen.
"Miss Summers. Delighted." The director held his hand out and she loosely shook it while she continued to look around the studio.
"Mr Angel. I'm glad we finally get to meet, I've heard so much about you." She finally focused her attention on him.
"And I about you." Angel looked her over and grinned at her, Buffy thought about all the things Spike had called him and stifled a giggle.
"Where's the star of the film, I was hoping to meet him." Buffy smiled sweetly and tried to ignore his roaming eyes.
"Spike?" Angel growled. "Don't get me started on him, he was meant to be here but no ones seen him and that pathetic manager of his just keeps mentioning something about him seeing some new girl. Just hope it's not Dru again, I hear she's been chasing him halfway across New York the past couple of days."
Buffy felt like she'd just been punched in the stomach, her face fell as she pictured Spike with Drusilla again.
"Oh. That's a…if you'll excuse me…I'm feeling a little…" She stumbled slightly and leant hard against the nearest chair to steady herself--she felt like throwing up.
"You okay? Can I get you something?" Angel caught her arm and searched her eyes. Buffy shook her head.
"It's the heat, playing havoc with my jetlag. I just need some air."
"Some other time then, we'll contact your agent to arrange another meeting. Hope you feel better." He watched her walk out of the hangar doors and smiled wickedly. Had she really thought she could fool him? He'd read the papers in New York, knew all about her and Spike, and knew she was the reason he'd been off set so much. Revenge was sweet.
Buffy stumbled out into the oppressive heat and back into the waiting taxi, she couldn't get her head straight--was Spike with Drusilla or was he looking for her? She was relatively new to his life in an old kind of way--she could be counted as his new girl.
She directed the driver to take her into town, not knowing what else to do she settled for being dropped off outside a café she used to go to as a teenager.
Stirring a cappuccino, Buffy sat in the little coffee shop and tried to clear her head--it had started to ache the moment she'd heard about Spike not being here. Buffy was pondering whether to hire a car and go to Sunnydale to see her mother when the phone rang.
"Hello?" She said wearily.
"You sound terrible." Anya chirped down the phone at her.
"Gee thanks." Buffy replied in a sarcastic tone.
"Well, you'd never believe who was just here."
"Who?" Buffy felt her butterflies return with a few friends.
"That adorable actor of yours, said he was looking for you and I said it was just like that movie because you'd gone looking for him."
Buffy could practically hear Anya beaming down the phone at her.
"What did he say?" She held the phone a little tighter as she waited for Anya to speak.
"He swore at me, could you believe it, he swore about the movie reference and Professor Anmoir almost died when he heard the obscenities that boy could spit out."
"Anya! What did he say when you said I was in LA?" Buffy held the phone so tight that the plastic creaked under the pressure of her fingers.
"Something about having to find you…"
"Oh…" Buffy's phone beeped at her. "Have to go, call waiting."
"Fine…" Anya muttered before Buffy switched to the other call, her heart had leapt up into her throat.
"Hello?"
"What the bloody hell are you doing in LA?" Spike growled down the phone at her.
"What are you doing in Paris?" Buffy retorted and her stomach span over hearing his voice again.
"Looking for you, you bloody ninny."
"I said I would come back, I came to see you in LA." She tried to keep her voice calm and level even though her whole body was shaking with nerves and excitement.
"Oh." Spike replied quietly.
"Why did you go to Paris?" Buffy tested him to see if her theory about her note was right.
"I panicked. I read your note and I had to find you. I couldn't get through to your phone…I panicked. Had to tell you I love you."
"Win the girl?" Buffy smiled down the phone. "Like in that movie?"
"Something like that."
"Didn't you get my text? I told you I had to go see Anya. I thought you'd at least reply."
"What text? I didn't get a text."
"Stupid phones." Buffy groused and listened to Spike chuckle.
"Next time you disappear, read the note before pinning it up, love. I'm not chasing you round the world whenever you go to visit your girly friends."
"Sorry. So, where do we go from here?" Buffy closed her eyes and sighed into the phone.
"What do you mean?" She listened to Spike's voice turn gentle and it heated her up inside, causing her to smile wide.
"You're in Paris and I'm in LA, where do we go from here?" She tilted her head slightly and listened to his breathing, he seemed to take eternity to answer and she wondered what he could be thinking.
"New York. The little park by the studios. Tomorrow. 9pm. Better not be late, missy." Spike sounded deadly serious and Buffy found herself nodding at the phone in response.
"See you then." She giggled.
"I love you, Buffy." He purred down the phone.
"Love you too, Spike."
She smiled as she shut the phone and looked at her watch. She had 24 hours to get to Westchester. Buffy pushed her cappuccino away from her and looked across the table, her lips curling into a wide smile--Spike was in for a big surprise.
